Power of a Nickel Global Health Outreach to Guatemala

With Tim Case International Ministries

February 10-17, 2018

Dr. Stan and Barbara Grogg, trip leaders

Our primary activity will be providing medical services to the residents of rural underserved areas. We will work with them, experiencing daily life with them; hear their struggles, hopes, and dreams. We will be working alongside the Guatemalan military in Jutiapa. Both rural schools as well as a local clinic will be used to evaluate patients. Jutiapa is located in the southeastern part of Guatemala. It is home to Mayan culture; in fact, the majority of people who live in Jutiapa come from Spanish and Mayan cultural backgrounds.

There are roles for participants from other fields – it is not limited to medical personnel, including non-medical helpers. Goals are listed on www.powerofanickel.org. Other educational objectives for medical students:

  • Facilitate learning experiences;
  • Provide intensive training of students in the art of medicine - without the use of lab, x-rays, and other technology. Students are encouraged to use their mind and hands to evaluate and treat patients;
  • Furnish opportunities to learn about a different culture and global issues encountered.

WHERE WILL WE STAY? We will stay in a moderate hotel in the city with private bathrooms, A/C, and hot water. We’ll encourage you to gather material supplies to donate to the community. The checked bag that each passenger is allowed can be used for supplies, educational supplies, oral hygiene supplies, etc. If you have access to a wheelchair, walker, or crutches – they are always needed.

Some participants may choose to see more of Guatemala before the outreach trip actually begins – or even after. We realize team members are coming from different parts of the US. The area around the airport is not the safest place to be, thus we will attempt to all arrive about the same time in order that we can board our private transport together to depart the airport heading for Jutiapa. The drive is about 2 hours (75 miles). Plan to arrive no later than 3pm on Saturday, February 10.  Do not plan on a return flight earlier than 1pm on Saturday February 17.

The cost for May 26-June 2 will be $1000 per person plus airfare. A deposit of $206 is due to hold your space. Group size maximum of 20. Personal costs will be meals en route to/from Guatemala, souvenirs, and any unscheduled activities the team decides to add. This covers lodging, most meals, private in country transportation, translator expenses, medications, supplies, and trip coordination and private security team. The final payment will be due to Power of a Nickel by March 25, 2019. Cancellation policies can be found on Power of a Nickel website.
