Testimonials – Peru
What Participants Say
“The Power of a Nickel International Global Outreach program to Iquitos, Peru was truly an experience that allowed me to cultivate my abilities as both a student and a human. There is no doubt that I am a better doctor today because of it. I was extremely grateful to join a group of extraordinary physicians and eager medical students in immersing myself in the culture as well as the reality of healthcare disparities among the people of Iquitos and coastal communities on the Amazon River. I will forever hold onto the lessons learned from the physicians and patients, as well as the encounters with the amazing nature and wildlife of Peru. These programs are essential to providing medical care, health education and bridging the gap between community short- and long-term primary care.”

“Our medical service trip to Peru opened our eyes to how differences in culture may lead to differences in the access of healthcare. In our culture, seeing a physician may require a simple five-minute car ride, while in the mountains of Peru, one may need to trek five hours on foot down a mountain. We, as a group, were fortunate to help people with education and advocation for long-term preventative self-care so that these treks may be few and far between. The experience is humbling, culturally enriching, and beyond rewarding, and we cannot wait to help people on the next Power of a Nickel trip.”

“This experience has transcended any other volunteer experience that I’ve been involved in thus far. We’ve done things that the common man only dreams of and I’m very grateful. I will be attending many trips of this nature in the future.
