About Our Work
Power of a Nickel travels with a strong medical student group to serve the indigenous people of the Yucatan Peninsula. As this is a recurrent outreach, relationships are secure with the local communities, local leaders, and local health care systems. The villages we serve are populated with fewer than 500 persons, some much smaller. They have sporadic access to medical care, often requiring extensive travel, which is difficult at best. The language is simply called “Maya,” and the people self-identify as Maya. Among Maya speakers, Spanish is commonly spoken as a second language.
With compassion, we bring basic medical care, wellness screening, life skills, and prevention. Educational seminars are presented by the team with topics based on community needs. Our longstanding partners include Maya Environmental Education and Research Center, CUAM
(Centro Universitario Anglo Mexicano), Fundacion Ciudad de la Alegria (City of Joy), Medical Missions and Imaging, local physicians and the Department of Public Health, as well as local vendors and volunteers.
