Empowering Girls: The Birth of MY TIME
Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: MY TIME provides feminine hygiene kits to under-resourced girls, championing their right to education, health, and opportunity.
In the heart of Uganda, dedicated teams from Power of a Nickel worked to serve under-resourced girls. Girls were faced with a significant challenge in the ability to have adequate, safe, feminine hygiene products.
Searching for a solution, Barbara enlisted the help of volunteers who generously donated their time and skills to create the kits. These reusable feminine hygiene kits will last a girl 3-4 years.
A grant from the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club further empowered the project, enabling the purchase of a serger sewing machine and necessary materials.
As the project grew, social media played a pivotal role in mobilizing support. Through Facebook groups, volunteers from far and wide contribute fabric, ensuring a steady supply of materials. The collective efforts of these dedicated individuals have made a tangible difference in the lives of under-resourced girls in Uganda – and now in Cuba and Vietnam.
Not only are the girls given the kits but they are also educated on women’s health and safety. This initiative stands as a testament to the impact of collaboration and community spirit, providing essential support to those who need it most.
How to Support MY TIME
- Fabric is always needed.
- Flannel is used for the pads. Darker colors or “busy” patterns are needed so that stains are not obvious. One yard will make 8 pads. In each of the kits, there are 5 pads.
- 100% cotton fabric – in darker colors or patterns. One yard will make 6 of the outer shields. Each kit has 2 shields.
- PUL (polyurethane laminate). This is a waterproof yet breathable product that is the center of the shield. One yard will be used in 10 shields.
- Volunteers are needed to cut out the pieces. There are 15 separate pieces in each kit.
- Volunteers are needed to assemble the pieces for sewing.
- Sewers are a critical part of the team. There is straight stitching and serging in each kit.
- Volunteers are needed to attach the snaps to the shields.
E-gift cards to JOANN are always welcomed as well. Power of a Nickel is a 501(c)(3) organization. Donations are tax-deductible.
